What is tick resistance?

Ticks are external parasites that feed on our animals and transmit disease-causing organisms such as Theileria that cause East Coast Fever. Other Tick Bourne Diseases include Anaplasmosis and Babesiosis also known as red water due to the colour of the animal’s urine. We control these ticks using chemicals known as Acaricides. There are different Acaricides in the market today and these are Organophosphates group 2 (Steladone), Amidines (Amitraz 12.5% – Tixfix), Synthetic Pyrethroids (Ectomin) and their combinations. Long-term use of any of these Acaricides, wrong dilutions, irregular application (skipping) and poor application methods all lead to resistance. We advocate for the correct use of either of the molecules at 3-month intervals and thereafter a rotation to a different molecule/active to curb resistance development.

I used Lanirat but I still see rats in my house yet the bait was consumed. What could be the problem?

Rats live in colonies. You need to have enough bait to totally control their numbers otherwise due to their short gestation periods of 18 – 23 days their numbers would grow back as soon as the bait is out. Lanirat kills them after 3-4 days post consumption and this is deliberate to enable you to eliminate the whole colony and avoid bait shyness. Keep checking the bait station and add Lanirat to the station as per consumption. 100% consumption means you double the dose; 50% consumption means you just top up; 0% consumption means you relocate the bait station.

How do I eliminate bedbugs from my home?

Use NEOCIDOL 600 EW at a dosage rate of 28ml per 2 litres of water. Bedbugs hide in cracks and crevices, joints and along mattress seams. Spray these areas directly using a hand pump. Repeat this after two weeks and thereafter monthly for 3 consecutive months to rid your home of the bugs.

At what rate should Ultramix Maziwa be given to a dairy cow?

At what stage do you give Ultramix Nyama and Maziwa?

Start supplementing your calves with Ultramix Nyama at the age of 3 months. Continue with Ultramix Nyama until the age of 12 months when you switch the female calf to Ultramix Maziwa and the Male calf continues with Ultramix Nyama at a higher dose of 100 grams per day.
